Here at CrossFit Solid Orange, our June 2018 Athlete spotlight turns to Rachel Mitchell. She has been here for over a year and she’s a great role model!
What got you to give CrossFit a chance?
I’ve always been a competitive person, so after hearing about it for the first time I knew I wanted to do it! I’ve always loved the idea of being strong and healthy, vs. skinny. I love the class atmosphere where you have the support of coaches that explain everything before we do the WOD, and are there during the workout to help with form and encouragement.
How do you view yourself now vs. right before you started?
I feel so strong and powerful! I can’t remember the last time I asked myself “can I even do this?” Whether it’s hiking, paddle boarding, push mowing the yard after an extremely physically taxing day, hanging Christmas lighted outside my house, I have the strength and endurance for whatever life throws at me, and I love that feeling!
Why has your discipline to workout regularly been so successful?
At first it was simply making a habit out of getting up early and going to the gym, that’s just what I did. I made the decision to do it and I did. But then I missed a week here and there and I kind of got out of sync with the 5am class and I couldn’t make myself get up to that 4:20 alarm clock! Then, very recently, I had the realization that getting up and out of bed is part of the workout! It’s actually the hardest part to me! I’ve included the early rise into how I prepare myself for the workout, I not only set out my clothes the night before, but I make the decision that that’s just how my morning is going to go. That’s the first step of the workout, you can’t workout if you don’t get out of bed!
When and what was your first “Ah-Ha!” moment with CrossFit
A couple weeks ago I accomplished my very first double under after Coach T-Jay broke it down during warm ups in a way I hadn’t heard yet. I just about died of excitement! I literally giggled like a schoolgirl and looked around like “did you see that?!?” for a solid minute. I still get a flittering of excitement every time I do one, LOL.
What Nutrition program are you following, and why does it work for you?
I started by removing all wheat and sugar from my diet, and that was great for a while, but then I heard about the ketosis diet and I haven’t looked back since! I love eating low carb/high fat, I feel great all the time because I don’t have the highs and lows of the blood sugar rollercoaster, and I don’t feel like I’m starving myself since the food is nice and dense
How many goals have you achieved so far?
I’ve never been very good at setting benchmark goals… I just want to be able to live a healthy fun life, and not feel restricted in what I can and can’t do because of my
health. So if that’s a goal, I feel like I’ve met it!
Give a great suggestion for a fun “CrossFit Question of the Day”
“What inanimate object would be the most annoying if it played loud upbeat music while being used?”
My answer: a coffee maker 🙂
