Athlete of the Month: GG Cummings

October 23, 2018

Here at CrossFit Solid Orange for November, we celebrate one of the most dedicated athlete we know - Giyonna (GG) Cummings!  She is highly focused and motivates everyone around her, all the while juggling home, school, work and CrossFit - how does she find the time?!

What do you do for a living?

I am currently working part-time as a special education teacher at Hickman Elementary. I also coach gymnastics three times a week at Gaby’s Gymnastics. In the near future, March 2019, I plan to start my nursing career full-time!

What got you to give CrossFit a chance?

I have been told numerous times that CrossFit would be the perfect thing for me. However, I never did the research until I got an email from Coach Ryan about a 6-week Challenge last fall, 2017. I thought this was the perfect invitation to begin the CrossFit journey.

You are very disciplined why do you come so regularly?

CrossFit is my sanity and definitely my stress relief. It pushes me physically but more importantly mentally which helps me in my everyday life, especially in an accelerated nursing school program. I feel physically and emotionally better once I have completed a WOD.

Who motivates you to be your best self?

My family and friends motivate me daily. My loving husband Nathan is always there, supporting my every effort even though he may not understand the lingo and why clothes are so sweaty. My brother, who is a body builder also has had an impact on how far I push myself in the box. Of course, Coach Ryan has played a role in keeping me coming back for more, especially on those things I HATE doing. Lastly, CrossFit Solid Orange Members are there day-in and out pushing me as they work beside me to be the best version of myself.

What is your proudest CrossFit Achievement?

The Bar Muscle Up!!!

Your favorite workout?

I love Annie (Jump Rope Double Unders & Situps for time) but any workout that has a good balance of cardio and a short time cap.

If a Workout was created in your honor, what difficult movement would have to be in it?

Handstand Walks

If you had the time, what countries would you visit?

I would love to visit anywhere in the Caribbean, Australia, or South Africa. I also would love to go on a Mediterranean Cruise and see France and Italy.

Tell us something people don't know about you?

I have an incredible fear of milk touching my skin so it’s often difficult when I make a recipe with milk in it. Occasionally, I also enjoy ice-cream and eat it as quickly as possible so that I don’t have deal with melty “milk looking” residue.

Cheesiest and most memorable warm-up we've done?

Keep away with plates or square dancing… both were epic and ridiculous.

Give us a suggestion for a "Question of the Day"...

If you could channel a super hero, which one would it be and why? (We’ve talked about super powers but not actual heroes unless I missed that WOD)
