Athlete of the Month: Alex Lourie

May 24, 2019

Alex Lourie has been at CrossFit Solid Orange for over 2 years! We've gotten to know so much about him and been along for all of his life's up and downs. It is an absolute pleasure to coach him as an athlete.    He is our June Athlete of the Month because of the long-term commitment to fitness he has made.

What do you do for a living?

I am a Freight Broker.  I negotiate rates with truckers to ensure our customers' products get moved from point a to point b for as cheap and efficiently as possible.  An entertaining story happened when a customer raked me over the coals 3 separate times, each time over 15 minutes - the load wasn't even my responsibility.  However, taking heat from upset carriers is a large part of the job.  This one really stuck with me because they even threatened to call the cops on me!

What is your background?

I'm originally from Columbia, SC.  I attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee.  I came to Nashville because a friend asked me if I needed a job, and would move to Nashville.  Sent him my resume, and then moved here July 12, 2014.  My family consists of my best buddy, my dog Reggie, my Dad, who lives in Murfreesboro, TN, my Mom and Stepdad still live in Columbia, SC.  I also have a younger brother who lives in Atlanta, GA.

What got you to give CrossFit a chance?

I gave CrossFit a chance because I needed a major change in my life.  It gave me the chance to be competitive again. The only thing I knew of CrossFit was watching the games on TV randomly in college.  I didn't know anyone who did it.  Just thought it looked like fun.  I didn't know much about it aside from it looked challenging and fun.  News flash it is challenging and fun!

What did you think after completing your first CrossFit competition?

After my first competition I definitely thought it was a lot of fun, and found a new respect for CrossFit and the athletes.  I also learned it's not smart to eat a protein bar 5 minutes before an event.  It made competition number two much more enjoyable.

Tell us something people don't know about you?

Something people may not know about me is that I'm an Eagle Scout, have a degree in Psychology, and coach little league baseball.

If a workout were created in your honor, what difficult movement would have to be in it?

Overhead squats would definitely be in the workout because I struggle so much with them.

How do you view the person you are today compared to before you started?

I am a happier and more confident person since starting CrossFit.

Cheesiest and most memorable warm-up we've done?

Line dancing to Copperhead Road.

When you're not CrossFitting, what do you like to do?

When I'm not CrossFitting I enjoy coaching baseball, many an outdoor activities, and playing with my dog.

I love to coach little league!  It's a lot; however there is nothing like influencing young people to be the best they can be.  When I get to see a kid that struggles all year, and then finally make a big play, or connect on a ball, it's an incredible feeling seeing that big smile on their face as they get to 1st base.  Coaching is challenging, frustrating, but very fun.  I'd love to do it forever!  Honestly, it'd be a dream job if I could find a way to do it for money.

Give us a good 'Dad' Joke....

I'd like to tell you a joke about pizza, but it's a bit too cheesy.
